The State of Our Federalism

I’m off to the thriving metropolis of Memphis, Tennessee, for the annual meeting of the Philadelphia Society. The subject of this year’s meeting is federalism, and the Society has kindly invited me to discuss my heterodox view over lunch. The text of my remarks appears here. To many faithful readers of this blog, probably an old hat; but it has a shiny new ribbon.

Initially, elected ledraes in the State of Arizona tried to use legislation to embarrass the Obama Administration into securing the borders. However, rather than responding to the task at hand, Obama has decided to dodge the immediate issue by moving the loci of conflict away from representative assemblies and into the court system, away from the influence of the people's tribunes, and into a more familiar arena dominated by his subordinates and closed to the voice of the people.Now would be the right time for Arizona's Congressmen in the House of Representatives to raise the specter of impeachment for failure to fulfill specific constitutional responsibilities.
