Defending the Free Society

Mario Vargas Llosa is one of Latin America’s most prolific and respected novelists and the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2010. His books, including The Green House and Conversation in the Cathedral, explore power, the individual, and Peruvian society with innovative narrative techniques. Politically active, Vargas Llosa also ran for president of Peru in 1990 as part of a center-right coalition. In 2018, he wrote an intellectual biography of sorts, exploring his understanding of liberal society and the temptations against which it must struggle. The Call of the Tribe is now translated into English.
