Industrial Policy and National Conservatism: A Debate

At the National Conservatism Conference on July 14, 2019, Oren Cass and Richard Reinsch debated the resolution, “America should adopt an industrial policy.” The debate directly addressed the economic challenges that a new kind of national conservatism will face, and suggests that there is more than one economic path to building a new conservative coalition.

There is no debate. Every political intervention in otherwise free markets reduces their output. Every reduction in output reduces human flourishing. So government interventions in economic activity is at root anti-human.

That industrial planning is even being treated as a serious subject of discussion in 2019 is ludicrous. What's up next for "debate"? Eugenics? Phlogiston? Phrenology? How about some old time alchemy?

Industrial planning should be mocked and its proponents vigorously chastised for brooking such an idiotic, collectivist and authoritarian subject which violates property rights and liberty on a national scale and if implemented would greatly reduce the prosperity and well being of all Americans, even the idiots running it...
